The requirements for a visa are fairly much the same from embassy to embassy. You may be required to produce original document showing the following, so you should take these with you when traveling to see a lady if you think you might wish to apply for a fiancee or spouse visa (K1 in US):

Proof of income - Bank statements, Salary Slips, Letter from employer.
Proof of relationship - Letters, Photos of the two of you together, Phone bills, Proof of previous visits.
Proof of address - Mortgage/Rental documents, Property Tax bills, Utility bills.
Proof of citizenship - Passport

Applications for a visa should be taken very seriously and not approached lightly. If an application is turned down, then a stamp is added to the ladies passport and it is then several times harder to get a visa. Simply not supplying the correct paperwork can result in her being turned down. The visa application fee is non refundable.

When a lady applies for a visa, if you can, go with her to the embassy. Where as most people in the west are used to officials and know our rights, people in the former USSR are used to accepting what they are told by officials. Documents must usually be submitted several days, to several weeks before the lady will be called to interview. If you are not able to attend the interview with her, then it is VERY IMPORTANT that you phone the embassy on the day of her interview and speak to the officer dealing with her case. If she is refused a visa, she will need your shoulder to cry on, for the whole process is not very pleasant for her.

Visa applications for a lady with children, require her application to be successful. You can then apply for her children to come as dependents of their mother, providing they are 15 years old or younger. The exact age someone is consider an adult (16 or 18) depends on which country you are from. A visa application fee is payable for each child that applies.
